What the **** ambience is in Minecraft or why the **** they added it?

You mean those random noises you hear underground? I've always been told it means you're near an open unexplored area down there, but even I'm not sure myself

I believe those sounds are there to display a fear of isolation and paranoia, you are mining on your own and alone surrounded by mobs. This is what I think.
