Can I retexture items added by mods?(minecraft)?

I download a mod to give me an item that can shoot fire.Although I do not like how the items texture looks. Can I change the texture of the item?

I think you need to make the texture in Photoshop and replace the texture of the item. I think there are some tutorials of that on YouTube
