I currently have a GeForce GT 720 which is absolutely terrible, can hardly handle Minecraft xD
I was just wondering if you guys have any suggestions for a card that can handle gaming with high graphics settings (preferably not too expensive)

You have to give the specs on your cpu and psu for us to make any sort of decent recommend
The specs are needed because there are questions about compatibility. It's not with the motherboard because every motherboard has a PCI-E x16 slot. The questions are if the power supply can support the card you want, if you have enough room in your case, and if the CPU is so terrible that it wouldn't do you any good to upgrade the card.
If you have a system with an old socket 775 Pentium or an Athlon II or 64 x2 CPU, then you might as well build or buy a new PC. In some cases you can upgrade the CPU, add RAM, and that will make it compatible with older or less demanding games.
Minecraft is a CPU intensive game so your question raises questions about your CPU. Adding Mods to that games taxes the CPU and RAM.
Pretty much any game out there needs 8gb of system RAM at the minimum to RUN.
Your GT 720 is well below the level of modern day integrated graphics. The iGPU in an Intel system is in the GT 730 to GT 740 level.
The tricky part is there are cards like the GT 1030, RX 550, and GTX 750ti that are much better than your GT 720. However, when you consider the amount of performance you get for they price you're paying, cards like the GTX 1050 and RX 560 are a much better option. Yeah, a GTX 1050 might be more $30 to 40 more than a GT 1030 but you're getting 80% more performance with the GTX 1050.
Low end systems that come with a GT 720 may not have a power supply that has enough output to power a better card. You need a 300w power supply for a GTX 1050. Possibly finding a used GTX 750ti at a good price is a viable option if you're willing to trust a used card.
Finally don't fall for the GPU VRAM trap. There are plenty of people who think a 4gb GT 740 is a good card or they think a 4gb GTX 1050 ti is a better card than a 3gb GTX 1060 because it has more VRAM.
