Made a minecraft server for my cousin and i using hamachi. I got hamachi set up and i downloaded the server from Minecraft's main site. I followed a video which told me to have a specific set of properties for the server. I put those in and did everything right. But when i went to try if it worked the connection to the server said "old" and when i tried to join, it wouldn't.

It means that your minecraft version is outdated, and the server version is newer. Update your minecraft to same version number as your server is.
If you just downloaded the server files from minecraft.net, the server version should be 1.7.9
You can also find the server version number from your server files, on the servers launch image name. It should say "minecraft_server.1.7.9".
Then of course you need to check your minecraft version. You can see it from the minecraft's main menu left corner. Server versions need to be the same. In this case, if it is the newest, it should be 1.7.9
