When I start my server up it says it's pinging. I don't know what that means. I've never seen it before.

This may break your heart but if I were you I would give up on the server I wasted 4 weeks trying to create one and when I did no one came. Just enjoy the servers that are already there, trust me servers are a very annoying thing to make and without proper knowledge is completely fruitless.

Servers are actually ridiculously easy to make, i have made 7 for friends and one for myself that ran from 1.7.1 BETA to 1.4.2.
Use a forge server, it is a lot easier and they are easier to get started, make sure you TCP and UDP port forward on your router AND firewall, and google whatismyip to get your ip address, with which you can then do a localhost and a external ip test to see if you and friends can connect.
