When ever i join a minecraft server the game freezes for a second then the whole game shuts off?

My friends have a server, but when ever i try to join, as soon as it loggs in the game freezes for a second then the whole game just shuts off. I tried googling it, but i got nothing! I don't know how to fix it, as i'm new to minecraft. So, do you think you could help?
