What minecraft server is right for me?

I want a server were I can build stuff but have to get materials as well. I also want to be able to attack people

You're looking for a pvp server. There are servers that are all pvp, meaning throughout the world you can attack people while still trying to survive by making your own base etc. There's also survival worlds that are purely building and gathering materials for survival, but they may have some pvp arenas where people can join and battle each other (more like a minigame). My server http://bosscraft.enjin.com/home has pvp arenas, but no pvp in the regular survival world.
