What can I do with a Minecraft Server?

Just some backround info I'm kind of a Noob/Beginner at Minecraft and I was wondering if I should start my own Minecraft Server(PS3) even though I hardly know what that is or can with it but I was wondering if someone out there can give me some info/help with all that… Thanks!
