Minecraft- How do I connect to a server?

So i'm new on minecraft and it says the i'm not connected to a server. How do i add a server or go to one please help and explain this to me?

If your on the PC, When you first go onto the Minecraft shortcut, and it takes you to the home screen, you go straight to Multiplayer. You should see the options 'Join Server' 'Direct Connect' and 'Add sever' IF you want to enter a new server you have to have their Server address. Click onto add server and don't do anything to the top option that says Server name.
Go straight to the Server address and type in the address. For example One I Get on is pvp.pitforge.com.
I know it probably isn't the best explanation but you know at least I Tried. Lol
