Can two people at different houses be on the same Minecraft world?

My brother and I both have Minecraft PC, but we live separate. Is there a way to make a server or something so we can both join it? And if so, how?

Go to minecraft.net and click download. There should be a button a little bit down, click it and download the server. Get LogMeIn Hamachi and tell your friends to also. When you have that done make a group and add all them to it. Tell them your IP at the top of Hamachi and bam! It's ready. It's worked for m and my friend, hopefully it works for you too. The Hamachi group and only hold five people if you don't pay though.
