I Can't Connect To Most Servers?

I can only connect to few servers, and most others, like my friend's whose got people in there, can't be pinged:/

If you can't connect to most servers, then you should not be able to use the internet, BUT if you can visit different websites, then you can in fact connect to these servers.

I don't understand "like my friend's whose got people in there, can't be pinged".
