How to stop minecraft launcher from installing 1.7.4?

I want to join my friends server but I need version 1.6.4 for it, so I downloaded the file and removed 1.7.4, but whenever I launch minecraft it always updates it. How can I stop that?

Click the "edit profile" button, then select the pulldont for version. Choose the release 1.6.4 button. Then your good!

When you go to profile settings there's an option to choose which MC version you want to use. It's usually at "Most recent" change it to"Minecraft 1.6.4". You should create a separate profile for this in case you want to play 1.7.4
