Once i click the launcher it opens however once i click play it just crashes and doesn't seem to work i have no idea what to do.

Delete your.Minecraft folder at its root directory (%appdata%) after manually backing up your save files. Reopen the Minecraft launcher and it will recreate the.Minecraft folder for you, and should work. If this doesn't work try reinstalling the latest version of java.
