How to set up a Minecraft server on a Mac?

I've downloaded the "minecraft server" from minecraft.net and I followed the instructions from this website: http://www.minecraftforum.net/...ver-on-mac

When I tried to log into my server from the minecraft application, the minecraft server says this: 2014-09-08 06:49:26 [INFO] Disconnecting /192.168.1.14:58081: Protocol error
2014-09-08 06:49:26 [INFO] /192.168.1.14:58081 lost connection

What does this mean?

I really want to be able to host my own server so I can play with my friends anytime. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

All right, just do this:

1. Download the latest server from Minecraft.net
2. Run it once in a folder, it'll download stuff and place it in there
3. Remember, leave the IP field in the properties file blank
4. Just run it and then join it with your IP. Just google your IP.
