Can't connect to minecraft multiplayer servers?

I have a windows 8 laptop which I got for Christmas. As soon as my minecraft updated to 1.7.7 last night, I wasn't able to connect to servers. I can still play on a vortex server but my cubecraft and city craft servers won't allow me to connect!
I'm not a total genius with computers so if someone could give me a step guide to sorting this out, rather then telling me 'check the blah folder'.

Hey there try get the IP information for the server you wish to connect to then try connect using ip address if that does not work try,

connecting with port number on the end like this, 128.251.113.251:5085
remember to use the: after the IP address to separate it so its IP: PORT

hope this helps

If you updated to Minecraft 1.7.7, and the servers you are connecting to are using a server version prior to 1.7.6, then you will not be able to connect using that version until they update. This is because Minecraft 1.7.6+ introduced a new protocol and server authorization system that relies on UUID instead of usernames. In the server list, you should be able to see a version number for each server on the right, and then you will likely see a red X next to that, indicating that your version is not compatible.

To fix this: Create a new profile in the launcher (bottom-left corner when you run the launcher). Name it whatever you please. Click the dropdown next to "use version" and set it to 1.7.5 (assuming those servers are running 1.7.0 to 1.7.5), then click save. Now make sure that profile is the one selected, and launch the game with that version instead.
