If I buy minecraft on disc from amazon or gamestop am I still able to get the various updates or no? If not then I take it buying minecraft online and downloading it onto my ps3 would be better since I get updates? *new to the modern gaming world, I'm back in the days of PSone*

On PS3, 360, Wii U, and any console more current, the disk version is the same as the version you get when you download the base game if bought digitally.
Either way, you can download the updates digitally to get the game current.
It's not like PS1-era games where the disk is the disk and there are no updates. There also wasn't a digital store for the games, at the time, either.
