How to put things in a chest on minecraft PE?

I'm trying to put things in chests because i'm building different "rest stops" for traveling around, and i want to put emergency items in the chests. So how do put things in the chest?

Are you in creative or survival? If you are in creative, you can't put items in chests. If you are in survival, then simply tap the chest and hold down on the items in your inventory until they moved.
