How to add a block on top of a chest without it opening the chest on a macbook for Minecraft?

Every time i try to add the block it opens the chest instead.

Guest

Put a block behind it first

Ex:
Block
Block|Chest

And then place the block on the block that is above the block behind the chest

Ex.
Block|New Block
Block|Chest

If that doesn't work
Block|Block
Block|New Block(placed on block above)
Block|Chest

It's not the clearest example, but…

Try shift clicking for pc and i don't know for xbox or ps3

Place a block behind and above the chest, and then add the block you want above the chest to the one behind it. And even if you do figure it out, the chest won't open with something right on top of it. Sorry.
