I have just installed the other ores mod but i can't seem to find any of the new ores (such as silver) in my current world. However if i generate a new world i can find them straight away. So do these ores not generate in pre-existing worlds, only ones that you generate after installing the mod?

You have to load new chunks on your current world, basically go to new areas you know you haven't been and mine there.

To find new ores in an old world you need to move far enough away from areas that you have explored that the game is forced to generate new areas (known as "chunks").
The previously-generated chunks will not have the new ores, but the new chunks might generate them at whatever rarity and levels the mod set the ores to.
Pick a direction (preferably one you haven't walked in before) and just keep moving in a straight line until you are in an area you don't recognize. Go just a little further (like to the next biome) and then start mining.
