If I install a mod onto my vanilla survival world in minecraft will the mod affect my world?

Depends on the mod. If it's a mod that has ore generation or natural generations then they will only take affect when new chunks are loaded. Each mod will behave differently but any mod that physically changes the world will only apply to new chunks
