Minecraft, how to get rid of ambiance sounds?

I want to play Minecraft but I get scared the heck out of when those random creepy noises come out of no ware, I tried looking up how to get rid of them but the information is for previous versions of Minecraft. The people always ask for resources folder but I only have "resourcepacks" folder. And i tried going folder by folder but its only numbers and stuff. Please help to get rid of these creepy noises.

Added (1). I have windows 8 and my micecraft is updated to the latest version.

In the latest versions of Minecraft you can actually turn down different sounds straight from the game. Just start your game up and hit escape. Choose options and then select music and sounds. You should see a slider for Ambience and enviroment, if you drag those all the way down it should stop you from hearing the creepy noises.
