Ross has the right idea. Terraria is an extremely popular 2d game where you tunnel, fight bosses, craft gear, etc. There's random events where zombies can break down your door, and the world's more dangerous at night as it is. Starbound is another game that's based off the idea of terraria, only it's quite different, more towards space exploration.

If you got a ps4 with ps plus you could get DON't STARVE for free! I just started and it's got some potential. It's challenging considering you got one shot to survive and gather resources and food.
It's on PC too.
