I'm in the market for switching out the old console for a PC. I've always kinda picked and poked here with it but I know the computer I have won't be able to support any real games, it can barely hold minecraft as is. I need to know what I should be looking for, the price ranges, and any kind of software I'd need to play games such as skyrim, WOW, pretty much any other RPG or FPS. I know nothing about PC gaming and what kind of things to be looking for- so a full explanation is really what I'm looking for.
How to go about buying a gaming compuger?
I'd say a well-built $1000 gaming PC can play today's games on medium to high settings and some even on ultra settings. Get Windows 8.1(64-bit) for better overrall performance in your PC. An Intel i5 Quad Core is what you should be looking for or an AMD CPU if the budget is tight. I've heard that AMD's CPUs are cheaper than Intel's. Same with AMD's GPUs over NVIDIA, but I still prefer NVIDIA. At least 8GB of memory. IMHO, if you truly know nothing about PCs, you shouldn't be asking here. Instead watch these videos made by Newegg on how to build a PC:

You could also look on the internet, what are the components of computers, how to know if they're good, what you will need depending on what you will do, etc. Hope I helped.
You find out the Recommended (or Optimal) Specifications need for the games you want to play.
Then you just need to compare what the game want to what is available to you.
Example:
SKYRIM wants…
-Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
-Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU processor
-4GB System RAM
-6GB free HDD (Hard disk drive) space
-DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with 1GB of RAM: Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 or higher; ATI Radeon HD 4890 or higher
-DirectX compatible sound card
-Internet access for Steam activation
And Windows 8 is not kind to the older games.
