How to add memory to minecraft?

I tried editing the profile, doesn't work. My computer has 6GB of RAM and Minecraft only uses 498MB. And a lot of the time now it runs out of memory and crashes in stead of getting access to more. Why? Can someone please help me?

Go into the launcher and click edit profile, tick JVM arguments, and change 1g to whatever you want.
