I don't think it appeals most to any gender. How it's advertised by the company, both genders want to play. But with stereotypes, when guys play minecraft, they are either famous youtubers, geeks who play in their mom's basement, or 10-year-old "squeakers" who still use rage face memes. With girls, they are trying hard to be "different" and "special snowflakes", which is also stereotyping too. And these stereotypes may turn people away, and that may be a reason why some girls don't play, and then the majority of the demographics of the game is male, but females play as well. Not sure if I answered this correctly, but minecraft by its advertisers is appealing for both genders, but the stereotype does not appeal to females, which turns them away as well.
