Can I legally/morally sell a custom plush of a copyrighted character?

Why I'm asking this is because I'm planning on making a Skyrim dragon plush, and I want to enter it in a art show at a local convention with the intent to sell. However, a friend of mine brought up the point that this may not be legal…

I know that there are many people who make fanart (Prints, plushies, ect.) and sell it, but I have only really found one case where someone got in trouble. I assume that's because they are not mass producing them, so the company's don't care?

Custom Pokemon and My little pony stuff plushies in specific seem to be everywhere.

I know some company's not only LIKE fanart (even for profit fanart) but encourage it, such as Mojang's minecraft, who as far as I know does not charge royalty fee's on youtuber's minecraft shirts and such. But others, like Disney, can be extremely aggressive.

But back to my original question: Can I legally sell a plush of a copyrighted character, such as a pokemon or a skyrim dragon?
And what if its a plush of a fan character? (example: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Trade-Wickle-OC-Custom-Plush-420305231 )

And as sort of a add-on to this question, Even if its or is not legal, is it moral? To make money off of someone elses character, even though you put so much time and effort into it?

I would love to know your guys take on this!

I already have the pattern made and the fabric, I just need to cut it out and sew it together xD

Make one first then worry about selling it.

People who post their big ideas and plans on the internet rarely even start their projects. I'll bet this time next year there's no skyrim plushy.

No and no. I wouldn't bet the farm that they would not come after you either. They seem serious about copyright infringment:

It doesn't mean a thing what other guys do.

When I asked Bethesda Softworks (via Obsidian Entertainment) permission to publish fanfiction, they said, "We can't give our official blessing, but as long as you don't charge for it, we don't have a problem." On that basis, I don't see BethSoft having any issue with what you plan if the money you charge is only to recoup the costs of your materials.

I don't know about Bethesda specifically, but I imagine as long as you don't get too big, they won't know, much less care about you. You're just one guy on the Internet, so I highly doubt you'd ever get caught, but even if you did, I imagine you'd be sent cease and desist letters before any real legal action would be taken, so you are pretty safe legally.

As for moral… That's really up to you. The fact that you're asking makes me think you have doubts, and if you have doubts, that probably means you secretly feel it isn't moral. If I were you, I'd check if there's an official line of Elder Scrolls plushies out there somewhere. If there isn't, I'd go for it as you can say you were filling the gap in the market and since they weren't pumping out anything like it, you wouldn't be siphoning any profit. If there's, maybe reconsider selling it if it really bothers your sense of morality.

People do it all the time on Etsy.
