I won't be hardcore gaming at all. I'll use my computer only for homework, YouTube vids, and MINECRAFT. I really love to play minecraft and I don't know what processor I should buy. I'm a bit naive about this subject, I have an AMD something in the pc right now but it is quite slow at times. I'm looking into an i5 but I find them at very different price ranges some starting at $40 which is what I want to spend and others at $200+ which I will not spend. Any ideas on the processor I should buy?

I5s are more for high end users planning on placing it into a high end gaming build. Given that you do not game heavily like them nor wish to pay a large amount, I suggest the Pentium G3258 instead.
I say the Pentium because even though it is only a dual core, it is a very good budget processor used by many budget PC builders. Core per core it's just as fast as most i5s and is also overclockable, all for the low cost of $70. It's one downside is that it is only a dual core, but since its two cores are so powerful that even in applications that use more than two cores it will still be great.
In order to purchase this CPU you need a compatible LGA 1150 motherboard and DDR3 RAM. You can't just drop it into your old AMD motherboard. Also a reinstall of your OS will be required (A reinstall is always advised for replacing a motherboard), so be sure to back up your hard drive.

You can't put an intel processor on an AMD motherboard… The motherboards are built differently…
So your only option is to upgrade that AMD processor to another AMD processor… Providing of course that your motherboard can handle an AMD upgrade…( knowing what motherboard you have will help in getting a better answer )…
