So i play minecraft and stuff. But before i press play on the launcher to the left it says create a profile or edit a profile. The only one i have is my screen name. I decided to mess with it so i made a new profile and it had no worlds.So i wen't back to my old one and deleted the new one.I'm just wondering what profiles are for.People told me there were something about modding, Or in case you have siblings. And that you can change versions for modding, That sounds cool, but what do they exactly do?

Basically you can change different minecraft settings, like how much ram to use, what version to play on, ect. You can also make new profiles to install mods on. If you just do a quick google search you can find out more on how to use it.

They can used to play different settings. For example when 1.8 comes out most servers will not support it on day release so you can make a profile to run 1.7.9 so you can play on older servers. Modded profiles can also be made, for example I have a profile that runs MCpatcher to improve my texture pack.
