You need a diamond pick axe to mine redstone and its about 20 blocks under the ground. Youve got to make compasses. Cantt remember exactly how to do it.

To find redstone you need to look underground, it is is grey block with splotches of red in it. You need a diamond pickaxe to mine it. You also need 4 iron to make a compass.

You don't need a diamond pick axe to mine red stone, an iron one will do. To find red stone dig to level y=16 (you can check this by pressing F3 on your keyboard or just mine 50 blocks below water level). When you have red stone, you also need 4 iron ingots, the recipe is:
