Do we get to keep our stuff when we leave the other players realm? I know nothing since I'm just starting and got my brother and cousin hooked.

Across different servers no. But if you rejoin that game and it was saved with you in it then you should be able to keep your stuff. I'm pretty sure however it has been a while

Inventory data is saved in each world's data, so in each world you have different stuff. When you return a previous world you have the same stuff in your inventory that you had when you left that specific world.
