Can i play minecraft online (xboxlive) with people who downloaded the game if i have the disc?

Ok so i'm getting minecraft for xbox 360 on a disc so i could play with my friends but they downloaded the game and i didn't i wanted to know if i could still play with them if i have the disc and they downloaded it please answer quickly i'm getting it tomorrow hopefully
