Why won't the crafting table launcher in minecraft pop up?

When I open minecraft.dmg the launcher doesn't work. My computer freezes up and I can't play 1.7.4. I'm getting really annoyed. Anyone know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. I tried deleting all minecrfat files and re downloading but that did nothing.
