Try updating your graphics drivers from AMD's website, if you have not already.

Multi-Core processor.
Try setting the Affinity to "0" for the older games.
Too many processors are 'confusing' the game program.
Also, try using 'Compatibility Mode' (XP, Vista, even Win98).
Run (install) games with Administrative Privileges might help, if you are the Admin.
