I understand that regular mushrooms can be used for stew, but do giant ones have a purpose, or are they just for looks?

They are useless but you can grow them with bone meal and captain sparklez used one as a house in skyblock

If your playing console or computer edition you can break down the giant mushrooms to get smaller ones. But their main purpose is mainly stew.

Breaking the blocks they are made of will yield 0-2 mushrooms each.
So you can bonemeal one mushroom and it will yield a lot more when you break it up.
