Something's wrong with my map item on minecraft. How do I fix this?

I decided to go out exploring today and look for a village. It started to get dark so I whipped out my trusty map to point me in the direction of home and it's not working. The player marker is still on the spot where my home base is and is looking roughly north. No matter what direction I look and where I move to the item isn't responding. Kinda like it's frozen from before I left my base. Now I'm stranded in the middle of a frozen tundra with no idea where home is and no clue on how to make my map work again. Help me please.

As you can see, I'm staring at the sunset, in the middle of a snowy wasteland, but the marker doesn't show this.

A minecraft map only covers a relativly small area of your minecraft world, this time around your base. Now sometimes there's a green player-like marker that will only face north, this is because that is where you made it/last looked at it and now that you are out of the area of the map it shows this marker. The map is pretty useless now so better start writing some coördinates down or downloading a minimap so you don't get lost next time!
