New to Minecraft? What should I do?

So most of my friends play Minecraft, and frankly I wasn't very interested. I mean sure sounds fun but I had other things to do. Recently, I bought Minecraft and now I don't know what to do.
I've heard things like skins and mods what are those? Is there like a certain basics I should know to stuff like this? Oh and I'm talking about multiplayer. I kind of know a little little about making stuff in single player. So I just wanted to see what you would do and things I should get and know to do.

Well simple, you should keep playing until you know the game

there are a lot of minecraft servers out there.

If you want to get started with multiplayer stuff -- there's a website that lists some cool servers: www.myminecraftservers.com

There's also a Forum there. Really new site but you could post and find some players to team up with

I have found that this video tutorial series (it's not play listed so just go to the poster's page to get the rest) is a very good introduction to the basics of how vanilla Minecraft works.

In Minecraft (and most other games for that matter) you character is really a wire-frame model over which a graphical pattern is stretched. That pattern is what is known as a "skin" because in addition other things it is the outer-most layer of your character you can see.

In more practical terms, a Minecraft skin is what your character looks like to yourself and others.

You can either make you own skin, or get one pre-made from *many online sources. You can then long into your Minecraft account *on the Minecraft website* and upload the skin to your account. That skin will be what you look like in single- and multi-player Minecraft games. (Note that occasionally the skin server can go down, if it does you will temporarily revert to the default skin.)

It works differently for the counsel versions of Minecraft, but I'm not sure exactly how.

Mods only matter to the PC version of Minecraft. If you are not playing on the computer, you do not need to continue to read.

A mod is a file, or series of files, that something in Minecraft above and beyond changing the configuration files. There are many, many, MANY, mods for PC Minecraft.

Some are tiny little tweaks, like giving you the ability to change the color of torches. Others add hundreds of new blocks, mobs, and other things. Still others change Minecraft so completely that its almost a brand new game.

Many people use mods because they make the basic Minecraft (called 'Vanilla" Minecraft) more interesting, challenging, or easier. I, for instance, won't play without an inventory management mod that allows me to sort my personal inventory and chests automatically.

When someone bundles mods together and posts them as a group it is called a "Modpack", and some Mopacks include a launcher that keeps the packs up-to-date for you.

Mods can be applied to Multiplayer games as well, but only on the server level. If the server you are on doesn't use mods, then you won't have access to mods. (Note that there are some exceptions.)
