Minecraft style game for students?

So I'm a world history teacher and I had a great idea that my students could collaboratively build pyramids on a server like Minecraft and maybe recreate the Great Pyramid of Giza or something of the sort. Does anyone know of a free program that could work for this, or another sandbox like game that I could use? It doesn't have to specifically be minecraft, it was just where my idea sparked from.
