Minecraft Multiplayer Problems?

Whenever I click to load Minecraft Multiplayer- it just says "Scanning for Games in your local network" and never actually loads anything. I have never set up a server or downloaded the server pack; do I need these to play public Multiplayer? Or is my internet just no good for Multiplayer playing?

Are those Servers official? I mean, started by a safe company? Do you have to pay? Do I have to give away info? What is the server download on the official site then?

No no no lol you have it All wrong you have to click on "Add Server" And enter whatever you want for the Address but for the "Server Ip" you need to look up on google or Bing or whatever "Minecraft Server Ip" There's a few good sites too but find an Ip address somewhere and enter it in for the Server Ip and boom there you go now you can play Minecraft Online

You need to add a server ip. I recommend

Play.hivemc, com
mc.hypixel.net
eu.mineplex.com or us.mineplex.com

In the multiplayer go to add server, chose a name and then add the server under server ip.
