Minecraft keep saying outdated server?

Lately every time I try to go onto a server in minecraft I says outdated server pretending to be 1.7.8. What does this mean and how can I fix this?

You have to downgrade your minecraft to 1.7.7. I've been struggling with this issue probably for a little over a half hour, and i finally fixed it by doing this.
