How to join a Minecraft server?

I'm so confused on this. I don't even know where to start at all. I have a pc and my Minecraft version is 1.5.2
I've never been good at connecting anything with Minecraft so please put it step by step if you can?

Its Easy Run Minecraft Up On the menu it has singleplayer multiplayer and like whatever options click on multiplayer and click direct connect or add server direct connect is like you put the ip in then join stright but add server is like so you can keep it if you like it BTW you have to make sure the ip is on minecraft version 1.5.2 thats an old version cuz 1.2.7 or a very new update is out you need the new launcher if you don't know what i mean maybe it might be easy to look on youtube type in = how to join a minecraft server 1.7.2 or 1.2.7 one of them there's not alot of servers for 1 5 2 cuz its an old version
