Minecraft Farming and despawning?

I'm playing Minecraft Ps3 edition, and by the sound of it, all mobs despawn if the player walks so many blocks away from them. That being said, does that apply to farm mobs such as cows and chickens? If i go on a huge adventure, will i return to an empty farm?
