I'm trying to make the nether core reactor but I need 18 more pieces of gold. I've looked EVERYWHERE. I swear I've dug over 150 holes to look for gold. One time I was told to go to bedrock, dig up 9 blocks, and there'd be a lot of gold, BUT NONE! Any ideas?

Look for some tunnels, i usualy just go exploring in caves and i eventually find what i need.
