Minecraft+should i use texture packs?

I'm playing around with texture packs and I'm not sure if I really enjoy them. I'm so used to the default textures that I can barely tell what any of the items are without hovering them. I've so far tried john smith legacy and pixel perfect packs. Both have good overall textures minus a few quirks with ore or mobs.

Should I bother using texture packs? Or should I just get the optifine mod to improve the default textures? I hear that the mod improves fps also so that maybe wouldn't be a bad option

In my opinion, texture packs make Minecraft look so much nicer. It's understandable that you don't recognise items just yet, but you will quickly become used to them, so don't worry about that.

You could have a look at the texture pack called Chroma Hills, it's very similar to the default textures, but looks a lot more up-to-date, and are a higher quality. Out of all the texture packs, this one probably stays truest to how Minecraft looks. I think there are both a high and low resolution version of this texture pack, should you have problems with FPS. However, unless your computer is really lacking, it shouldn't really affect it.

You can use Optifine with a texture pack if you wish. You make it sound like FPS is an issue for you, Optifine can improve that, but you will have to try for yourself. If you're already playing on the lowest settings, you wouldn't push your FPS up that much.
