How do minecraft mods work?

I know what mods are but how do you install them? Do they cost money? I'm specifically talking about pixelmon, where do I download it from? How do I install it into my game? And how do I use it? (A link to a video would be most helpful)

There are many ways to install minecraft mods, and most if not all of them are free. There are many minecraft mods and they are to better your experience. To install the mod you can do a number of things. I encourage you to first download minecraft forge. You will be presented with a.jar file. Just double click it and select install. After this, navigate to your.minecraft or minecraft bin (if you use a mac) and drag the downloaded mod into the mods section. Here is a video
