So I heard that some college students had originally came up with thew idea of Minecraft and made either a prototype or something of the game for fun. Then someone comes along and loves it so much they buy the rights to it from the college kids and makes it into the official game. What college were those kids from is my question?

The first version of Minecraft was developed by Markus Persson as a personal project - he was inspired by games like Infiniminer (developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the US), but never bought any kind of rights, so maybe that's what you heard? Or you heard something made-up, or it wasn't Minecraft.
