Minecraft control issues?

I play a lot of Minecraft on my computer, which happens to be a mac. I really enjoy the game, but there's something wrong with my controls. I have to hold down left click to grab an item in my inventory or any other menu such as the furnace, crafting table, etc. To place an item in a slot in one of these menus, I have to hover the item over the slot for a second or two in order for it to place. I also can't shift click in any menus, which means if I have a stack of wood, I have to covert them into planks one by one. This makes simple crafting a long and tedious job. I have played Minecraft on other Macs without this problem, so I know I don't need a PC to solve this problem. I have also checked the control settings within Minecraft, so I know that is not the solution. Any help would be great.
