I'm playing minecraft and this kid is saying he "stole my ip address" and he is saying he can get into all of my internet files and everything including my credit cards and all of my profiles and accounts to everything. I'm almost positive hes lying, because he sounds like he is just a 11 year old kid trying to troll or something, but some reassurance or and explanation would be encouraging.
Is it possible for someone to steal your ip address?
Well i do play minecraft a lot and i can tell you thats impossible because he must be stupid or something
Maybe.
I'm not sure what he meant by "steal" the IP address… It is possible to discover someone else's IP addresses (look up netstat for more info on how you can find that). And in theory with an IP address it is possible to compromise a network and gain access to your computer systems through and try to find any data that may not be well secured. Although when he says "profiles, accounts, to everything" that is sound a bunch of bologna like he making a bunch of stuff up!
I play plenty of online games and I hear little kids make these kinds of bluffs all of the time. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
When it comes to keeping your network and computers safe, be sure to keep up on software updates, and make sure you use strong passwords. Not to mention firewalls and virus protection does a good job of shutting down attacks. Following these basic steps will pretty much shut down 99% of attacks as hackers generally like to go after "easy" targets… (Think 90 year old grandma that still hasn't upgraded from XP and uses Office 2000). Or simply people that don't use strong passwords or never update their stuff.
Perhaps a simple test to find if someone is bluffing about your IP address is to look up your IP address on google (just type in "what is my ip address") then ask the kid what it is… If he can't tell ya, he's bluffing
TL: DR - I'm pretty certain this kid doesn't pose a threat
