What I mean by this is although there's of course big channels out there, those channels normally started off a couple of years ago.
Is it all down to content or because of the big channel (seananners, goldglove ect.) making more people believe they can do the same, therefore more people making videos.
So is it down to good content, starting off a while ago (or just dodgy thumbnails)
Thanks.

Is it near to impossible to become big on YouTube now?
Stuff like Gmod and Minecraft are overdone. It's hard to become a big channel if you play games, because there are so many people doing the same.
I think it's down to good content, try to be original. Just keep trying~
On the other hand, once someone's friends with a big channel and play with them they'll get a lot of subscribers, a bit unfair, but I saw it happening.
Honestly, becoming big is easier if you move to the animating part of youtube, ScribbleNetty who animated Pewds vids etc got loads of subs.
But, since you're a gaming channel, you'll just have to make yourself stand out with good & original content, eyecatching tumbnails and a lot of patience. Having a weekly shedule's also a plus.
It just depends on what your channel is about and the demographics, what age group of people will be watching? Obviously if your market something from the 13-30 age range you will have a much higher probability of blowing up your channel because more ppl in that age group use youtube than say a 45 year old
As long as you can make original content there's a chance to gain popularity. I agree with a previous answer that video game content is already well represented on YouTube.
Do something unique, I managed to gain 2k subs and 2m video views in 2 weeks of starting making videos… And then my channel got terminated because of Copyright I currently on my new channel have 1.6k subs (i don't make videos any more)
Minecraft is too mainstream and too many people post minecraft content… You want to be a popular YT Gamer? Try to do something different to everyone else. Find a product that is unique to you that no one does atm. And play that.
Honestly your best take would be playing and reviewing RPGs. With the current trend of Horror / Simulation games. YT is kidna lacking in the RPG department… However don't do anything you do not enjoy, eventually you will end up like me, just stop making YT videos because you don't enjoy what you do. So just remember. Do something that you LOVE to do. And you should be fine.
If you want to make Minecraft Videos, you can still do that but be unique. Make a PvP montage of awesome kills or something… Do something that people are not doing.
