How to get minecraft to recognize my texture pack?

How do I get minecraft to recognize my texture pack?

Added (1). I unzipped someone else's custom pack, edited the files I wanted to edit, saved it in a new zip file with the exact same format and folders inside. I didn't leave out any files that were in the previous one. I gave it a new name and put it in the resources folder with the other texture pack (the original one).

But mine doesn't show up on the list in minecraft, so I can't use it or see what it looks like.

Added (2). It's PC minecraft, if that wasn't obvious.

How would it be obvious? Linux minecraft works exactly the same way. You put the zip file in the resources directory.

You left something out or messed something up. Try giving your zip file the same name as the original. If it doesn't work, then you broke something.

If you are using Windows and have a newer version of winzip, it's possible Minecraft can't unzip the file to check the contents. Winzip, in their infinite wisdom, changed the zip file format and many older zip file readers won't read their zip files. You might try using a different zip utility, or an older version of winzip. The zip utility that comes with Linux works fine.
