I totally agree, I first started playing minecraft when not many people knew about it and the old music really made me feel part of the game. Unfortunately nowadays minecraft is getting a bit stale and as you said the glory days are over. Just a tip so its not so stale though is to start playing different types of servers or use mods like Pixelmon or other Forge mods, good luck.
